Lake Kaindy did NOT fill up soley from rainfall after the natural dam formed as a result of the earthquake. Prior to the earthquake, it was the Kaindy river going through the gorge that then formed the lake after the quake. The level of the lake now seems to be going down. To me, when I saw it in May of this year, it looks like erosion at the top of the dam is responsible for the decrease in water level at the lake. I spent a week each in Astana and Almaty and plan on going back in a couple of years because I still didn't get to see all that I wanted to.

Lake Alakol should be included in this list. This is a unique place. This is the only salt lake with black beaches. In addition, the water in the lake is unique in composition and is therapeutic.
